Ria Formosa Natural Park

Culatra Island

It is part of the five islands of the Ria Formosa and is about 7 km long and has 750 permanent inhabitants, divided into three population centers - Farol (to the west), Culatra (in the center) and Hangares (between the two) - where the authentic Algarve lives, as the population is made up mainly of fishermen and their families.

A Culatra

Culatra

The island of Culatra has a wild nature and beautiful beaches, with kilometers of deserted sand, even in August. The sand is white and fine and the sea is like a swimming pool, reminiscent of the Caribbean, with crystal-clear, warm water in summer.

Visit the beach of Culatra Island along a wooden walkway and admire the wonderful scenery. On the way to the beach, you'll see some very funny houses! Many are decorated with objects related to fishing.

The "Culatra 2030 - Sustainable Energy Community" initiative aims to create a pilot renewable energy community on Culatra Island. The community will produce energy exclusively from renewable sources and will have its own energy distribution system.

The urban core of Culatra Island is quite traditional. It is inhabited throughout the year, mostly by fishermen, although there are some second homes here, which are more used in the summer.

As we enter the harbor of Culatra Island, the professions linked to the sea come into view. Here you can see fishermen bustling about with their nets and also the workers in the oyster beds.

It has a school, a kindergarten, a sports park, a church, a grocery store and a health center. It has several cafés and restaurants, so there are always plenty of options for a meal.
