RIA FORMOSA NATURAL PARK

Fauna and flora

The Ria Formosa Natural Park, located in the Algarve, is one of Portugal's richest and most fascinating ecosystems , with a unique diversity of fauna and flora that have adapted to the dynamic and ever-changing environment of this lagoon area.

This area, made up of barrier islands, salt marshes, canals, dunes and shallow waters, is a true refuge for endemic, migratory and ecologically interesting species, contributing to the balance of the ecosystem and to local economic activities.

It is one of the most important areas for birdwatching in Europe. The region is a passage, resting and feeding point for thousands of migratory birds that travel between northern Europe and Africa.

The fauna and flora of the Ria Formosa are a natural treasure that requires continuous care to ensure its preservation. This ecosystem is not only vital for biodiversity, but also sustains local communities, combining nature, culture and economy in a unique way.

Fauna

One of the most remarkable aspects of the Ria Formosa is the diversity of animal species, some of which are threatened with extinction. This reinforces the need for special attention to environmental conservation in this unique ecosystem.

The shallow waters of the Ria Formosa create ideal conditions, with favorable temperatures and an abundance of food, which promote the development of marine life. This environment not only serves as a refuge, but is also a privileged area for the reproduction and maintenance of various species, especially fish, molluscs and crustaceans.

Research carried out in the region has identified a wide range of species, including:

  • 288 species of molluscs,
  • 79 species of fish,
  • 15 reptiles,
  • 11 amphibians,
  • 214 birds,
  • 18 mammals,
  • 8 arachnids (such as spiders),
  • 5 crustaceans (such as lobsters and crabs),
  • 6 annelids (such as earthworms).

Flora

The Ria Formosa is home to around 766 plant species , divided between different habitats that stand out for their biodiversity and unique characteristics:

  • Dune vegetation: The dunes, formed by the action of the tides and winds, are unstable environments. On the side facing the sea, the vegetation is sparse, while in the protected areas there are plants adapted to the sandy environment.

  • Salt marshes: Located in sheltered areas and protected by islands or sandy barriers, salt marshes are habitats covered in typical vegetation, submerged at high tide and exposed at low tide.

  • Riverine vegetation: This develops along watercourses, such as the Lourenço stream in Ludo. This vegetation is essential for water birds, offering food and shelter.

  • Forest: A continental strip with degraded vegetation, but still rich in floristic diversity, including species with conservation status and endemics.

These different types of vegetation reflect the ecological richness of the Ria Formosa and its importance for the preservation of biodiversity.
