Os Hangares fica voltado para a laguna da Ria Formosa, entre as localidades da Culatra e Farol. Este é o núcleo urbano mais pequeno, procurado sobretudo pelas casas de férias.

The site owes its name to the fact that there were two hangares here that belonged to a support base for French and Portuguese seaplanes that took part in the anti-submarine warfare in World War I.

In the middle of the 20th century, a delimited area near the pier was used as a training ground for the Portuguese Navy.

Even today you can see an old bunker and the military service area fenced off with wire!

Where the authentic Algarve lives, as the population is mainly made up of fishermen and their families.

Right at the end of the world conflict, in 1928 , 'Ti' Zé Lobisomem set up his fishing hut there . The fisherman would settle there ten years later. They still call him the "pioneer". Other family members would join him in the following years.

Nos anos de 1960, o Ministério da Marinha cria um campo de treino de inativação de explosivos e de demolições, conhecido como o polígono de tiro da Culatra. Toda a zona foi vedada com arame farpado.

For decades on end, explosive detonation exercises were carried out on the coast, right in front of the village of Hangares, which already had a few wooden huts belonging to fishing families.

A esta povoação chegavam navios da Marinha, que deixavam os explosivos para os exercícios dos fuzileiros navais. Em 1998, o polígono de tiro da Culatra foi abandonado, mas o arame farpado ficou.

Durante a Primeira Guerra Mundial, o pequeno enclave na Ilha da Culatra foi um centro de aviação naval destinado à luta anti-submarinos. Depois, passou para o domínio da Marinha Portuguesa. Hoje, apenas permanecem as memórias e o arame farpado.

This area could be called "no man's land". Walking along the sandy beach facing the Ria, the scenery couldn't be more inhospitable. And surprising. Especially for those who come for the beach.

The barbed wire fences are several kilometers long and surround the Hangares cluster of houses.
