A wetland of international importance, the Ria Formosa is a labyrinth of canals, islands, swamps , which extends along 60 km of the Algarve coast, between the beaches of Garrão and Manta Rota.
There is a great diversity of fauna and flora that can be found. The lagoon is protected from the sea by a discontinuous line of narrow dunes, which form five barrier islands and two peninsulas.
A diversity of plant communities corresponds to an abundance of fauna that constitutes one of the outstanding aspects of the Ria Formosa, with emphasis on birds and marine life, including numerous species considered threatened, one of the main interests of nature conservation.
